Common examples include AA, AAA, C, and D batteries, which are typically used in low-drain devices like toys, clocks, and smoke detectors. While these can come in various chemistries, including alkaline and zinc-carbon, lithium metal variants offer higher energy density for slimmer profiles.

  • Secondary Cylindrical Batteries: These are rechargeable batteries that can be depleted and then refilled hundreds or even thousands of times. The most popular type of rechargeable cylindrical batteryis the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Li-ion batteries offer high energy density, low self-discharge rates, and come in a wide range of sizes, making them ideal for powering laptops, tablets, cameras, and other electronic devices.

Within the rechargeable category, there are also sub-types to consider, such as Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) batteries. These offer similar advantages to Li-ion cells but in a more flexible pouch format, which can be useful for specific space constraints. However, due to safety considerations, Li-ion cells in a rigid cylindrical format are more commonly used in consumer electronics.


Cylindrical Battery Sizes: Finding the Right Fit

The size of a cylindrical battery is denoted by a five-digit code. The first two digits represent the diameter in millimeters, and the next two digits represent the length in millimeters. The final digit is a code specific to the manufacturer. Some of the most common standard cylindrical battery sizes include:

  • Small Cylindrical Battery Sizes (diameter less than 15mm): These include popular sizes like AAA (10 x 44mm) and AA (14 x 50mm), commonly used in small electronics.

  • Standard Cylindrical Battery Sizes (diameter 15mm to 26mm): This range includes 18650 (18 x 65mm), a popular choice for laptops, power banks, and high-drain devices due to its high capacity. The 21700 (21 x 70mm) is another growing standard offering even more capacity.

  • Large Cylindrical Battery Sizes (diameter over 26mm): These are typically used in industrial applications or high-performance power tools, such as the 26650 (26 x 65mm) battery, BYD 4680 battery (46 x 80mm), EVE 4695 battery (46 x 95mm).


Choosing the Right Cylindrical Battery

When selecting a cylindrical battery, consider these factors:

  • Device Requirements: Match the battery voltage and capacity to your device’s specifications.

  • Application: High-drain devices may benefit from Li-ion cells with higher discharge rates.

  • Size Constraints: Ensure the battery physically fits within the designated space in your device.
